Umbrico attended the Ontario College of Art (AOCA) and received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts. She has had solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and Asia including PS 1 Museum of Contemporary Art, NY; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; International Center of Photography, NY; Museum of Modern Art, NY; Kunstverein Ludwigshafen, Germany; Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane; Art in General, NY; Gallery 44, Toronto; Dazibao, Montreal; Santa Barbara Museum of Art; Julie Saul Gallery, NY; and Bernard Toale Gallery, Boston. Her work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the International Center of Photography, among others. She is the recent recipient of a grant from Anonymous Was A Woman, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and an Aaron Siskind Individual Photographer’s Fellowship. Umbrico has taught at the Rhode Island School of Design, Columbia University, New York University, Cooper Union, Parsons School of Design, Sarah Lawrence College and is currently core faculty at the School of Visual Arts MFA photography and related media program in New York City, and chair of the MFA photography program at Bard College.
